well.... kendo can be a sport but also can be a martial art. for people that do it daily, well...it's a martial art. For people that train crazy in the summer and don't go more than once a week usually, well.. it's a sport. Many people today also treat kendo very seriously and take it as a life long practice. The changes in kendo have not made it "soft" or "weak" it's just ...different. Don't ever chase skill in kendo because the real person you are to defeat is yourself.
Thanks,

@hikitsuzuku Having read some of your comments on here, there's no way you are an experienced kendo practitioner. Most kendo practitioners I know have humility and dignity, not the massive ego you display. Pretty much every comment you make here ends with some snarky remark about how awesome you are, which is an indicator that you're not nearly as good as you think you are.

@DrChalkwithering old school will focuses on basics and can be tedious and boring but will take you further. why do you thinks other countries tend to get smashed by most japanese kendoists? old school kendo takes lots of time and dedication but will make you better by practicing much more fundamentals and not having its main focus on speed and winning. if youve ever faced someone whos dedicated themselves to this way it would open your eyes and make you envious of what theyve learned as have i.

@DrChalkwithering captain obvious strikes! its called martial ARTS for a reason it is an art outdated by technology just like any martial ART. any simply put sport kendo emphasis is on speed before technique to score and win matches but you will never be able to do proper kirikaeshi, kakarigeiko or kikonju with sport kendo simply put. old school kendo focuses on technique and power before speed which will come later. old school kendo is boring and wont interest your casual practioner.

@hikitsuzuku You denigrate "sport kendo", but like it or not Kendo is a sport. It's certainly not a martial art; it has absolutely no combat applications whatsoever (no one even carries a sword nowadays - it's not even legal in most countries) so frankly you come across as a bit snobby when you talk about "old school kendo" beind superior when it has absolutely no relevence in the modern world. There's nothing wrong with sports Kendo, since sport is the only application Kendo has.

@tenken1013 uhhh his left hand is not in the middle. if you cant see it you need to train a little more. anyways the best japan has are all old school guys. not sport kendo. sport kendo has no power and is just about touching the point while trying to be fast. old school has more power and takes time to learn correctly but after time the speed will come. proper footwork and koshi are the basis of old school kendo which many sport kendoist lack like the person in the video.

One first viewing this looks awesome. On second viewing, it seems like he's screwing up all the basic kihon. I'm still a beginner, but much of what he's doing would earn me a lecture if I did them with a sensei.

wow! I like it!!!

@tenken1013 youre just showing how much you dont understand. hes hitting with his right hand. your left is always the power hand. there is no correct tenouchi without using the left properly. anyways yes i can hit that fast if i dont lift all the way like him. the hard part is doing it correctly with kihon and speed. your kendo is probaly americanized and sport kendo. its hard to find but old school kendo is the best not the tapping shit you see now days.
