How to recover iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch restrictions passcode WITHOUT needing to jailbreak your device.

This done be using the device backup files and a "plist" editor in Windows.

1. Download "plist" editor from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Programming/File-Editors/plist-Editor-for-Window...

2. On your computer, locate this file:

"662bc19b13aecef58a7e855d0316e4cf61e2642b"

It is one of the backup files that iTunes automatically generates when you sync or backup your device. You can find it on your computer within a folder at this location:

%AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

3. Open the file with the "plist" editor *.

4. In the file, locate this key: "SBParentalControlsPIN". The 4 digits under this key is your passcode.

* If you get this error: "Conversion of data failed. The file UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header if XML", then make sure that the "Encrypt backup" option in iTunes is unchecked.

For Mac users:

There is an editor included in the Apple Developer Tools for the "plist" files. You can find it on the Mac OS X Install disc under Developer Tools package (Developer / Applications / Utilities / Property List Editor). For a third party application see: PlistEdit Pro - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/plisteditpro/

You can locate the backup folder on Mac at this location:

[your-user-name] / Library / Application Support / MobileSync / Backup /

The rest steps are the same.

For iOS 5 users:

There were many complaints that this method does not work under iOS 5. Sorry, at this moment I can't verify if this will work with iOS 5 or not ):

However, if you have an older backup folder from iOS 4 or previous you can recover the restrictions passcode for that folder in the same way as been described above.

  • @AfflictionKing48 iOS 5 ???

  • I tried on my iPod touch and my iPhone 3GS both running iOS 5 and it didn't have the "Parental controls pin". Help?!?!

  • @Gonadcrusher Please note that many users complained that this method doesn't work under iOS5. However, others claim that they've been able to successfully use it with iOS5 devices.

If you backed-up your devices before upgrading to iOS 5 and still have the backup files, then it is easy to recover the restriction passcode from the previous backup files (the ones before upgrading to iOS 5).

  • For iPad owners on Windows 7, do this: 1) Press Start on Windows; 2) Type %appdata% in the "Search Program and Files" box, hit ENTER; 3) Open AppleComputer file; 4) Open MobileSync file; 5) Open Backup file; 6) From there, use the "Search Backup" box on the top right hand corner and type 662bc, hit ENTER; 7) Search in the 662bc ones that are "Files" not MMDATA File. 8) Open each with Notebook; 9) The password usually has a T next to it, then 4 numbers, towards the end of the file. Good luck!

  • @1fevi If you look a little further on after you see SBParentalControlsBlocked you will see the letter T and four number - this is your code. Just done it now and had the same problem as you found the T and the four numbers and it worked. Good Luck!

  • Fantastic! Recently upgraded my iPhone 4 to IOS5. I suspected the code had been jammed in the upgrade somehow, but as soon as I found the PIN, I recognised it as my own :-)

BTW: I just followed the instructions for pc/Windows, searched and found the PIN in an old backup file from IOS4.

    Thank you!!

  • @SNSD3269 make sure that:

    1) Restrictions on your iPhone is set to ON.

    2) At least, one restriction is set to OFF (i.e. Deleting Apps, Installing Apps, etc).

    3) Your device is then synced and backed-up with iTunes.
