Golborne playing in their red and white away strip complete the double over Wigan St Cuthberts.Golborne continued their recent improvement in form on Saturday with a deserved, although narrow victory over Wigan St Cuthbert’s.Cuthbert’s playing down hill scored within two minutes, hooker Gareth Houghton scoring a try, converted by Jamie Dallimore. This was the kick up the backside the visitors needed and what a performance the players put in against a much bigger team. The home team had the majority of the possession but struggled to break the Golborne defensive line until late in the game. All three Golborne tries came through the backs, twenty minutes in James Muir sent what could only be described as a Barnes-Wallace pass to James Byrne, who in turn flicked wide to winger Craig Keating who stepped inside drawing Dallimore and returning the ball to Byrne for a stroll over the line.Four minutes into the second half Keating intercepted on his own line to sprint the length of the field to score in the corner. The try of the game came in the seventieth minute, full back Kevin Nicholson running the ball in his own twenty passed to winger Ryan Williams who tore down the touchline cutting infield on the Cuthbert’s twenty, and held on until Dallimore was committed then passed inside to Danny Byrne who flew over the line for a breathtaking try.Cuthbert’s pulled back to 18-12 but required two scores after Tommy Smith dropped a goal to make it 19-12. The home team struck back with minutes remaining, Dallimore jinking over the line. The home team could sense an opportunity to win the game but were held out by the determined Golborne team. On the last play Dallimore went for a drop goal but Smith read the play and charged the ball down then kicked down field, the chase was on with players breathing down his neck it looked like he would certainly score but for the ball changing direction and bouncing off his knee to run dead. The delight of the Cuthbert’s players was cut short, the referee blowing time for a 19-18 victory to Golborne.
