In commemoration of the 75th birthday of Elvis Presley, the National Archives presents a discussion of the meeting between Elvis and President Richard Nixon at the White House on December 21, 1970. Timothy Naftali, Director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, hosts a discussion with Egil Bud Krogh, Assistant to the Counsel to the President, and Jerry Schilling, veteran music industry professional and long-time friend of Elvis Presley. Krogh and Schilling were present in the Oval Office and now offer their eyewitness accounts of the meeting, along with on-screen projections of related photographs, memos, and correspondence in the holdings of the National Archives.

  • Elvis gave Nixon a firearm yet Nixon abhored firearms, was a gun control advocate and thought American citizens should not be trusted with guns. Elvis had redeeming character, yet Nixon was a tyrannt of the highest order.

  • great guy to the end

  • This was very interesting meeting. I don't think Nixon should have given Elvis the badge just because he wanted it. It was ridiculous what Nixon said about Elvis just taking prescription drugs. Elvis did smoke pot, used LSD twice and snorted liquid cocaine. He got Joyce Bova, the friend Jerry referred to, pregnant and then talked her into getting an abortion. I think it is fascinating that Elvis had fans working in the White house. Cool stuff. Elvis was and still is a interesting person.

  • Terrific! A must see! Three guys with a great sense of humor talking about Elvis meeting Nixon. They provide a lot of insight information in a very entertaining round. Thanks to the National Archives for posting it.

  • @caucus100 The reason His voice was in decline. was becouse of the perscriptions medicine He was taken. They alter your voice you know. In 1970 That's the way It Is. The President Of the International Hotel said. And I quote him. Elvis Has more drowing Power than Sinatra, Dean Martin. Of course straisand, He said is our own star. Still they Can't Compete. Albert Goldman's Book Titled ' Elvis' Was to me the ultimate. He Goes back to the Red Neck Roots. And The fallowup The last 3 day's.
