Again, we shouldn't stop learning other langauges just because we already know the most spoken one - Enlgish. America should reach out to other countries by speaking thier native language to build trust, stronger comunication, and better understanding. Well... I'm just a young adult, and I don't plan to live only in America. I aspire to travel the world. I only have one life so might as well reach to other people in more ways than just knowning my own culture and language. I vote for change! :)
Being multilingual (at least bilingual) can change our perspective of the world as we learn about other cultures. Americans should not be egocentric. I don't understand why people insist that it is wrong for Obama point out this fact as if it were insulting. He is just being realistic and wants to improve the nation.
Besides even if English is the dominate language in the world, we should not remain "pompous."
I think people should open up thier minds and see how important it is to speak more than one language. What Barack Obama is saying is true. It is embarrasing for us to only know one language. We should become diverse. We should not be closed minded and only focus on the English language. We should learn Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, French, Italian, ect. Chinese by the way is starting to become the most spoken language if it hasn't already.
So why aren't we multilingual? In essence, because we don't have to be. English is the dominant discourse in our sphere of activity, meaning the discourse (language + dialect + usage + referential background) used by those who hold the strings of power, those who make the rules. We don't need to know the languages of immigrants; they need to know our language, because we have power and they do not. The elitism dripping from this monolingual attitude is enough to leave a stain on the floorboards.
Hm, even if we're bilingual, we won't be necessarily bilingual in the same language. What about French, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese? I think it's best if we let things be and not impose mandates on the people.
Fuck Obama -- We have choices but spanish is being forced and you tell American people to make shure they learn spanish .I say to White people and others that love this contry --Learn spanish but dont speak and you see how much hate is coming from their mouth .

what a bad guy........asking for young american citizens to become more worldly and well-rounded in this increasingly GLOBALIZED world.
terrible man.
I think people that get offended by this comment really should get up and learn another language, it's embarressing.
sorry pompous america...we are not the king country of the world, even though we may act like it sometimes.
but really, it is pretty sad.
EVERY young person I met in France while I was there knew english.
