In fact, most paper/cardboard products can go in the compost. You just need to make sure you add something nitrogen-heavy (anything that was green, or any sort of manure - your own personal poo will do, sanitation permitting) to counterbalance the carbon.

Putting stuff in the recycling bin is a better option than putting it in the garbage bin, but the process of recycling is still energy intensive, no? We use our toilet paper rolls to grow vegetable starters (not leafy greens, because they respond badly to the carbon in the cardboard), but onions, shallots, tomatoes, etc. We cut the roll in half, fill it with light seed-raising soil, put a seed in top and voila! Easy to transplant to the garden because you don't disturb the little roots.
