I heard that the city of St. Augustine, FL almost allowed a developer to demolish the Castillo and build water-front residential homes/condos on the property during the 1970's.
Thankfully, the castillo is still standing and is being taken care of by the NPS.

As an Indian Residential School Survivor from The Pas, Manitoba I wanted to see where this "Cultural Genocide" originated. I was put on a train shipped to a Residential School & forced not speak my Native tongue, given Residential clothing & deloused, hair cut which was very similiar to what the 72 POW Indians were put through. It was a pilgrimage & spiritual journey for me to go to this site. The sand felt like it had a heartbeat of our Native brothers & sisters when I attended.
