The Brookings Institution hosted a discussion on Pakistan and Afghanistan and offered status reports on both conflicts. Jeremy Shapiro, director of research for the Center on the United States and Europe, and Vanda Felbab-Brown, Brookings fellow, discussed their recent research trip to Afghanistan. Bruce Riedel, senior fellow in the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, offered his assessment of the ongoing offensive in Pakistans Swat Valley and said that Pakistani democracy is very important for United States as it has learned over the years that military governments have been sowing hatred and discontent in Pakistani people. Bruce Riedel expressed his concern over the release of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the leader of Jamaat ul Daawa- formerly called Lashkar e Tayyaba and said that Pakistan needs to show its seriousness in combating extremists and stop distinguishing between good and bad Jehadists but United States, he said, cannot and will not take over the nuclear weapons of its most important strategic ally.
