This is not free energy, lol. You expend energy when turning the crank and the energy you expend is what charges the battery. Of course, it is inefficient, but it's better than nothing in emergency situations.

This is just or emergency purposes, like when your power goes out and you cellphone goes out. Of course, it is inefficient, but you're still pretty much screwed when the power outage goes out at night and all you have for backup are solar cells.
