I got this phone from Anders over at:
http://www.ingelstam.se .
Okay, I got a broken iPhone 2g. The problem is that the bottom half of the screen doesn't respond to touches.
That means its glorious days as a phone are gone, but I figured i could make something else with the darn thing.
The first thing that came to my mind was a clock, so that's what I'm currently making.
What have you done with your broken iPhones? Any cool ideas?
----
I've gotten a few comments asking me why I don't just pay and get it fixed (someone even called me a moron - thanks!):
The answer to that is that this phone is over three years old and that I'm not overly interested in fixing it as I have newer iPhones. I don't spend money on things I won't use anyway.
But more importantly; I love fiddling around with technology so finding new ways of using stuff by programming and building/rebuilding is MUCH more satisfying than paying to get it fixed.
I've done this since I was very little, modifying toys, tried to figure out how they work and so on.
If you don't play around with stuff you won't learn :)
I made this when I started to learn objective-c and the iPhone SDK, and since this video was made I've become quite good at it.
I understand why your asking and I hope this answers that part :)
If you think it's dumb, just continue with your life and don't comment.
he is obviously lying, because if the bottome half didnt work, then he couldnt even unlock the phone to get to the clock app

@TheAwesomepplrule
When you upload and run the app to the device from Xcode (the IDE you use for developing apps) the phone is unlocked without you having to slide with your finger.
So each time you run your newly baked app from the mac, the phone is unlocked and the app runs. :)

Where Can i find a tutorial to do a clock?... My ipod touch has Big Bugs: when it recharges, its showing that the battery is full, The Sleep button doesnt work... can you make a tutorial 4 a clock PLease?

@RXJuday that's weird about your iPod. Well, I programmed this clock to work with broken screens.
If the touch screen works you could probably just download an alarm app from the appstore and use your ipod that way ^^
For the aluminium frame: I just measured the screen, made a template of paper and then drew the thing on a thin aluminium plate. The it was easy to saw out the piece. I used some violence and a hammer to bend the aluminium so it could stand ^^
Hope that helps.

You know the screen and digitizer are only 60 to be replaced right? My iPhone had a huge crack down the side of it and it's only 60 off ebay to do yourself.

@proihacker230studios yeah I know, but thanks for the tip anyway :) Glad that allowed you to fix your iPhone.
I'm not overly interested in fixing this iPhone as I have newer ones. It's actually quite fun to have it as it is - it makes you try finding other uses for it ^^ Cheers
