Crossing the road can be a complex business (particularly if you've seen the Jon Pertwee 'Splink' film), so the COI (Central Office of Information) employed the cast of Dad's Army in a campaign promoting pelican crossing etiquette. This is one of the funnier COI films, which often used scare tactics to alarm their audiences into compliance.

  • timeless comedy, just done the simple way with the right people infront of the camera and behind it,

  • This was filmed in Woodley, Berkshire, my husband remembers watching them film it. Woodley has changed somewhat since then. The houses no longer exsist and this part of the road is now pedestrianised.

  • The street nowadays is probably full of hoodies.

  • @Joolzr68 I live in Woodley as well, too young to remember when it used to look like this, I can just make out where Waitrose is now though, and those block of flats at the back.

Also I think that this crossing was just painted on specifically for this show.

  • 'Learn your blinking pelicin signals' alright alright no need for the language

  • The signal lanterns shown in this brillant clip was the work of UK royal designer for Industry the late David Mellor CBE, who was asked by the UK Dept for Transport in the 1970's to produce a full signal lantern system that would bring a 'uniform' appearance to the UK's traffic signals and his pioneering plastic signal design for both vehicle and pedestrian indication continues to be seen in Britain to this day...

  • i always stop...

  • Dont panic, dont panic!

  • I think they should use it again! Its still correct now!

  • @PoshLifeforME

    grade "A" right.

Although, I might suggest Peter Kay as an exception...he's just a downright decent chap, and he enjoys these PIF's too...

  • Oh, and half of it is missing! Where's the Warden and the Verger?

  • Wrong date. This was filmed in 1976.
