1st National Criminal Justice Summit
Manila Hotel, Manila
05 December 2011

President Benigno S. Aquino III served as the keynote speaker of the two-day 1st National Justice Summit attended by Justice officials, legislators, law enforcers, legal scholars and civilian representatives that aim to present, validate and propose solutions to the challenges of the criminal justice system in the Philippines.

With the theme "Advancing Justice," the President said that the gathering is very timely due to the daily news headlines in television and newspaper wherein the role of the Justice sector is seen to be significant in espousing democracy in the country.

The President added that since the beginning of his government, he started an initiative to correct faulty actions in the government and check on the corruption allegations of the former administration through the creation of the Truth Commission. He further said that he respects the equal authority of the Executive branch and the Judiciary but it must always be remembered that both branches serve the nation for the interest of the Filipino people.

The Chief Executive stated that he will never contravene from his sworn oath to defend the constitution, enforce the law, uphold justice and serve the country and its countrymen.

Members of the Justice Sector Coordinating Council composed of Chief Justice Renato Corona, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo signed the Declaration for Justice Reform that intends to modify and improve the justice system in the Philippines.
