Japan's Okinawan Dugongs and their habitat have been threathened due to the new construction of a US Military Base at Henoko, Okinawa.

Japan crying about saving sea life..  what a joke. Japan is the worst destroyer of the seas on the planet. I understand.. Japan is a sea-dependent country. Ok. Many reasons for Jpn (and US, for that matter) to complain about US presence. This isn't one of them. And be sure not to confuse USA with U.S.A. One of them is Jpnese.

I've surfed that reef outside of Camp Schwab many times, and never once did I see any evidence of a dugong. No floating shit, no surfacing for air, nothing. Heck, I didn't see enough grass to sustain a population.

It's a made up sham just to keep the airbase from being built.

I agree with SPRAWLX, Japan is the largest destroyer of marine life, and there are many reasons that no more bases need to be build on Okinawa. seems that America does things to upset Japan and likewise Japan does things to upset America (regarding the ocean in this instance) so when is there going to be some kind of compromise. Those of you who haven't seen any Dugong that's not surprising they're endanged How about no more bases on Okinawa and no more japanese whaling of the coast of aussie

Anybody who has lived in Okinawa knows that the Dugong has been long gone for quite some time. You can blame the poor environmental practices of JAPANESE construction companies who don't control their run off and overall pollution. Funny how the naicha protesters get all environmental when gaijin are involved yet no where to be found when natives are messing stuff up (and they probably got their construction permit though bribes too).

It's all a ploy concocted by the uyoku dantai nationalist.

Born on Okinawa never seen dugong 34 years don't know anybody who has or anybodys friends,relatives.Dugong lives in the karama island where its not fucked up. Save the dugong what a fuckin bunch of crap. They use to eat them thats why their not around! the still eat and sale dolphins. They called it the dumb fish cause it would follow them into the bay. no work they came to use and club them and eat them. Okinawans call it HEE-TOO

This is total propaganda bullshit. I've lived in Okinawa for 25 years and never heard shit about dugongs until the Henoko heliport was proposed... The largest area of dugong-edible seagrass is in the huge Awase bay area that's now being filled in. How come we don't hear anything about that? The only place they find dead dugongs is in fishermens nets. How come we don't hear anything about that? Because these people don't care about the dugong; it's an anti-base/anti-American propaganda tool.
