A 16mm experimental film made with a homemade motorized animation stand and an optical printer. Still images are collaged onto mylar sheets and animated into a state of perpetual movement. The images are layered increasingly to an eventual state of sheer abstraction. The surfeit of advertising imagery is occasionally punctuated by rapidly morphing images of mass graves and other horrors from the 20th century. The idea behind the film is to contrast multiplicities on opposing sides of the capitalist coin. The film suggest the nervous energy of electrons but is entirely film based. Completed in 2009.

  • Thanks for your kind words! There were 5 layers of mylar, each with collaged picture elements, some of them opaque and some transparent. The table was top and underlit. The layers were moving independently on X-Y compounds. This gives the impression of layers moving through one another. In some cases the camera was backwound to allow for superimposition. This again helped with the impression of image blending. Hope this helps!

  • Terrific work John, horrifically hypnotic!

In part one you have full-exposed layers crossing and passing, before moving to "sheer abstraction". How did you achieve such precise layering? Did you matte the mylar and re-photograph?
