Its because the "r" is sounded with a roll, "drl" in Japanese. Meaning its more of a trans pronunciation; we replace the "r" with an "l" because the "r" essentially makes the "l" sound when pronounced in Japanese.

If you have ever seen the anime Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom they do the same thing to a girl in that show. Her name was Eren in the Japanese format, but when pronounced to English speaker's sounds like Ellen.

Its just to make it easier for English viewers.
