'गोपाला मेरी करूना' ही अब्दुल करिमखा साहेबांची ठुमरी आणि दस्तुरबुवांचं काय अजब नातं होतं देवच जाणे! सवाईगंधर्व महोत्सवात त्यांना दरवर्षी न चुकता 'गोपाला...' गाण्याची फर्माईश व्हायची आणि दस्तुरबुवांही अगदी आवडीने ते गात! फारच अप्रतीम गायचे! साक्षात अब्दुल करीमखासाहेबच डोळ्यासमोर उभे करायचे!

Pt. Firoz Dastur is considered the doyen of the famous Kirana Gharana initiated by the legendary Ustad Abdul Karim Khan Saheb. Pt. Firoz Dastur was trained in music along with Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Smt. Gangubai Hangal. He has carried forward the tradition of this gharana innovatively. He is known to be a guru par excellence and an enlightened teacher. He has been a respected professor of music in the University of Mumbai for more than two decades.

In a singing career that has spanned almost six decades, Panditji has enthralled audiences both in India and abroad. In addition to performances at prestigious conferences like the All India Music Conference, Sadarang, Sarba Bharatiya Surdas Sangeet Sammelan, Sur Singar Sansad and Tansen Music Festival, Panditji has participated in every Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav since 1952.

Panditji was a Professor of Hindustani Classical Music at the Bombay University since the inception of its Department of Music in 1969. The many honors and awards Panditji has received include the prestigious - National Award awarded by the Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi, The Tansen Award awarded by the Madhya Pradesh Government, Jimmy & Shirin Guzder Trust Award given by the Federation of Parsi Zoroastrian Anjumans of India, Honorary Doctorate conferred on him by the South Gujarat University and Maharastra State Gaurav Puraskar awarded by the Maharastra Government.

Pt Firoz Dastur died in May 2008 in Mumbai after a brief illness. He was 89.

Udayji thanks for this excellent rendition of Gopala by Pt. Firoz Dastur. He was a true desciple of the Kirana Gharana and one can visualize Karim Khan Saheb in his gayaki alongwith his individuality which is a hallmark of a great artiste. Keep up the good work of posting these gems. You efforts are really appreciated.
