Monsters in combat! First installment in a great trilogy.
Ardross would probably have won the 1981 Arc if he'd run. He absolutely squashed the Arc winner Gold River in the Prix Royal Oak.

Le Moss's full brother, Levmoss, won the Ascot Gold Cup and the Arc in 1969.
The dam of Ardross was a daughter of Levmoss.

superb. Two of my most favourite horses. Great jockeyship, also, from Joe Mercer on Le Moss, who just always seemed to know how to keep accelerating at the right moment. Timeform said that Le Moss was probably the best middle-distance horse that year and wished he'd been aimed at the Arc.
If I could have one wish, it would be to see Le Moss 1980 v Ardross 1981 (they'd both have been 8, I think); probably a dead-heat.
