Abkhazia became part of the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Despite nominal independence, the Central Soviet authorities retained tight control of Abkhazia over the next 60 years. But the republic pushed for independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and a civil war erupted after Georgia sent in troops.

The declaration came at a high price, with a harsh economic embargo impoverishing a once thriving region. In 2004, Georgia's new president vowed to bring Abkhazia back into the fold. But as Jonah Hull reports, most Abkhazians say they will never be part of Georgia again.

  • @doganaktas It's strange because of that orthodox church have to be less conservative. I don't really understand all the shit happenes with people who fight against their brothers or sisters or far relatives. Also I don't understand guys who still blames people of other religion or nationality. So I can't do anything. When I type here in youtube people just swear dirtily at me and tell me that I am moron because I live in country where I live. I think others have the same situation.

  • @SofoQutaisi The real enemy has always been outsiders, Name it persians, Mongols, Arabs, Russians, or Georgians.

  • @ninakias Georgians gave us lands? They are still living on our Lands while 90% of Abkhazians are in exile.

  • @Homelleon, Many muslim Georgians( they were the majority) have to flee from their homes in 1870s due to pressure from Orthodox Georgians too.

Georgians are not like us in understanding of religion, they are usually very conservative.

  • @doganaktas orthodox - it's about church? Or... who is orthodox cousins for them (cousins from Gerogian country?). I haven't undestood it clearly.

  • fuck separatism this peace of shit people make world dangerous place

  • @Homelleon

That is not a case, i have georgian relatives as well, in turkey. Many of my best friends are also Georgian. We have problem with those nationalist genociders in Georgia.

BTW majority of georgians(apx 60% live in Turkey virtually all of them have fled from massacres done by their orthodox cousins )

  • @10georgian Such a stupid gruze, neither Apsua nor Asua were Georgians, In fact Gruze were our agrva for centuries.

  • @N789A

Dont be naive, Russians never really had abkhazia, neithe Nicolia, nor Stalin could have absolute control. Even Byzantines never had control over Abkhazians. Read history, Read our fight, learn what it takes to be a Living(being).
