well thats one way of doing it but this is how I would repair it by removing the whole plasterboard out and replacing it with a new plasterboard it will save a lot of work but still its good Job been done there

Yes that is another way of doing it. The problem is it creates a lot of un-neccessary work. You would have 2 butt joints to trowel, you would have to replace the cornice as well. This patch, done this way is totally concealed and will never crack and takes only about an hour to do.

Yes it is a pre mixed top coat.

Depending which country you are from it is called varying names. Here in Australia we refer to it as" top coat" or it can be "all purpose compound" the later can be used for all three coats but it is an air drying compound and depending on temperatures can take 24 hrs or more to dry.

I guess us plasterers want some more of that global warming to assist drying LOL.

I had to patch up a house that had over 30 holes in walls and ceilings due to possums :)
