Kiriyama Glass Works is developing a bioethanol dehydration system. Using this new system, Kiriyama engineers succeeded in producing 99.9 percent ethanol concentrate directly from a 5 percent hydrous ethanol mixture using an integrated distillation/membrane separation process.
In an azeotropic hydrous ethanol mixture, the concentration of ethanol is approximately 96% by weight, the concentration of ethanol cannot be increased any further through distillation. However, using a Zeolite Membrane Module produces an ethanol concentrate of close to 100 percent purity.
It is possible to take an extremely weak mixture of hydrous ethanol with an ethanol concentration of between only 5 to 10 percent, heat the mixture so that it vaporizes, and then pass it through the Zeolite Membrane Module. The module membrane then separates the water molecules from the ethanol molecules.
The most outstanding feature of this bioethanol dehydration system is the fact that the vaporized mixture passes through the Zeolite Membrane Module without cooling, thus eliminating the need for reheating. This dehydration system exhibits excellent efficiency.
The system produces a final ethanol concentrate that is 99 percent ethanol by weight.
The Zeolite Membrane Module is a product of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co.
Bioethanol is a real alternative fuel for the future: Biofuels are under attack. The claim Bioethanol is the main cause of increased food prices is just one of the many false statements being spread to the general public. We have decided to stand up and contest these falsities with supported evidence.
