VIOLENT, hail-filled storms swept across Adelaide this morning, with police reporting at least 20 car accidents on slippery roads.

Police spokesman Senior Constable Mick Abbott said "heavy rain and hail across the Adelaide Hills has made driving very hazardous".

"Motorists are advised to please use caution and drive to the conditions and adjust their braking distances, especially in the Hills," he said.

In serious accident about 8.30am, the driver of a van had to be cut free by emergency service crews after it collided head on with a Nissan 4WD trapping on Belair Rd at Lynton.

Several other cars were involved in rear-end collision as a result of that accident.
