In Newark, NJ on July 12th 1967 John Smith, a cab driver, was pulled over by the police. An argument led to a fight, and the Officers beat John down. A crowd swelled around the police station, and a rumor spread that John Smith had died in police custody. Though John hadnt died, the crowd responded as if he did. The Newark Riots followed.
The riots reflected the hostility and despair of the disenfranchised African American community. This Documentary explores the children born during this time. They still live in Newark, and find themselves in a city that is statistically worse off then when the riots occurred. As adults their issues are plentiful, but the lives theyve made out of mud are colorful.
