In Fall 2009, pipa virtuoso Wu Man curated two concerts for Carnegie Hall's "Ancient Paths, Modern Voices" Festival celebrating Chinese culture, bringing together an eclectic group of musicians representing the nations rich musical traditions. This video documents Wu Man's travels around China, seeking out artists for the festival. The resulting concerts at Carnegie Hall reflected the different rural regions of the country, for which many of the musicians had traveled out of China for the first time.
Featured in this video are: A Dong Female Singing Group from Guizhou province in southeastern China; the Li Family Band, from the Datong region in the north of Shanxi province close to Mongolia, one of the most prestigious of the Daoist ritual groups with a heritage of some nine generations; and the Zhang Family Band, comprised of farmers from the rural areas of Shaanxi just east of Xian in northwest China that tour the nearby countryside to perform its rugged shadow puppet dramas at temple fairs and rituals, promoting the well-being of families.
Magnificent video, and excellent taste in the selection of the musicians and groups shown here.
