Alternative Transport
Technology Turning Lives

Language: English

The rugged topography combined with highly challenging hydro-gelogical conditions has made conventional transport extremely difficult in Nepal. Up to the late 1950s, trails and mule tracks were the only means of transportation throughout the country. Though this is still the case today in many mountain districts, considerable efforts have been made to link remote villages with towns and economic centers via roads. During the monsoon, mainly the areas which are connected through the earthen road get cut-off from the main road network. This directly leads to the people being deprived from essential services like food supply, health facilities, schools and markets. As such the majority of human settlements located in hilly and mountainous area remain isolated. Their socio-economic activities continuing to depend largely on a trail based transport system reliant on human and pack animal power.

Considering this, practical Action Nepal has introduced and successfully demonstrated various alternative transport systems such as gravity goods ropeways, tuins and bicycle trailers/ambulances that have significant impacts on the lives and livelihoods of poor people by improving their access to markets and other essential services.
