Democracy NOW! DN! - Some controversy over Jimmy Carter's recent book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid." In it, the former US President criticizes Israel for

what he calls the "continued control and colonization of Palestinian land." Carter faults Israeli settlement expansion for the failure of the peace process and is

also highly critical of the US role in the Middle East, particularly its history of using veto power on the UN security council to block more than 40 UN resolutions

critical of Israel.

We will have a debate on the book. Joining us from Montreal is Gil Troy. He's a professor of American history at McGill University and author of Why I Am a

Zionist: Israel, Jewish Identity, and the Challenges of Today. Norman Finkelstein is here with me in our studio. He was a professor of political science at DePaul

University. His latest book is called Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History. Originally aired Jan. 8, 2007 and published with written permission from democracynow.org. http://www.democracynow.org Provided to you under Democracy NOW creative commons license. • God, Finkelstein just ripped him a new one. Owned.

  • I find it telling how zionist commentators all seem to have a similar demeanor, of an agitated, blustering liar.

  • Finkelstein is lying his head off. In one part of the video (min' 4.00 - 4.20) he claims: "The second Intifada begins September 28th 2000. Between September 28th 2000 and March 2003 there wasn't one Palestinian terrorist attack".. then, immediately (min' 4.20 - 4.29), he contradicts himself, claiming: "The Suicide Bombings began 5 months after the beginning of the Intifada".. Of course both claims are false. To see how false - take a quick look at "List of Palestinian suicide attacks - Wiki"..

  • Israel, a Jewish state.

    America, a Christian state.

  • Oslo was a sham, it was played out in a way that a magician would do slight of hand.

  • @marx102

The UN Partition Plan, UNGAR 181, authorized a "Jewish state" and an "Arab state" in Mandatory Palestine as soon as the British left. But I will agree that the Left Wing Jews who founded the modern state were more interested in creating a socialist state than a Jewish one. I am happy that finally Netanyahu has demanded recognition of Israel as the Jewish state as a requirement for ending the conflict. Otherwise, what is the point of Israel if not a Jewish state? That's its identity.

  • @JBGodzilla

Please list the nations that recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

  • The question is simple. It's either Jewish land or Arab land. Since 1938, the Jews were prepared to compromise over the land, but the Arabs have never accepted Jewish national rights on ANY part of the land, no matter how small. Even now, Abbas has categorically stated he will never accept Israel as the Jewish state. If not, then what are we "negotiating about?" Never heard of any ancient Palestinian state. The word "Jew" comes from Judea, as the word "Irish" comes from Ireland

Your mom made some excellent statements with me in bed last night.

  • Notice how one sounds intellectually honest while the other sounds like someone being "careful" about their words, manipulative?
