Track 5 from the June Tabor - Ashore album (2011, Topic Records Ltd.) Declan MacManus (aka Elvis Costello)/Clive Langer Elvis Costello wrote this song, Robert Wyatt made it justly famous.
I heard her on BBC Radio 3 a few moths back singing a jazzy song, and I just had to stop and listen: I'd never heard of her before to my shame. Saw her live with the Oyster Band in Brighton recently, they were all just brilliant! What a fabulous voice -
Have to echo the previous comment. I hit 50 and wham, another brilliant artist, whom I had been aware of but have 'got to' via the incredible Martin Simpson, who has accompanied her on guitar. This really is an astounding song. Robert Wyatt's version, great as it is, and now this... not forgetting Elvis' own recording which includes the spine-tingling double-tracked Chet Baker trumpet solo!!
i love rock music...but this...this is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's just a rumour that was spread around town
Somebody said that someone got filled in
For saying that people get killed in
The result of this shipbuilding
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls

Is it worth it
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy's birthday
It's just a rumour that was spread around town
By the women and children
Soon we'll be shipbuilding
Well I ask you
The boy said 'DAD THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE ME TO TASK
BUT I'LL BE BACK BY CHRISTMAS'

I've come to June Tabor's music pretty late in life but have to say quite simply that this is a stunning version. Wonderful!
