Here below is the agenda-setter video on REDD which was sponsored by the UN-REDD Programme, produced by TVE and which was used as a curtain raiser for the United Nations Secretary-Generals High Level Event on REDD held on 23 September 2009 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The High Level Event and subsequent Press Conference were broadcast live on http://www.un.org/webcast.

  • Dear Beto "after significant efforts are made to reduce global emissions". Yes please: AFTER, not before.

And, also: please fist " strengthen[ing] their land tenure rights", not afterwards. In a world where those who onw, rule, the indigenous will soon be totally deprived of all rights and power. There won't be anything left to be "stregthend". No more false solutions! Too much time was wasted already. PIC is beautiful on paper. But it does not work. Make it work first.

  • REDD is not a right to emit, but rather an effective way to offset residual greenhouse gases after significant efforts are made to reduce global emissions. It should be part of the solution and not the only way of addressing climate change. REDD can only succeed with the fair involvement of local communities, based on the principle of prior informed consent and strengthening their land tenure rights. REDD can make the opportunity cost of forest conservation higher than that of destruction.

  • The "switch of the paradigm" is to pave for good (more correctly for bad) the assumption of a right to emit. Anybody should have to pay for destroying, nobody should get payed for not destroying. That's the fundamental problem with REDD. If this passes, watch out for a sleek video for Exxon to get paid by you and me for selling all the fossil stuff they own. Thanks a lot! It is time to freak out. Let's go to Copenhagen altogether to stop them selling off the entire planet and our future with it.
