Successful treatment of depression without the realization of relaxation-techniques is not possible. You can find some facts describing this circumstance in the article: Feist, A. (2007). Struktur der Persönlichkeit und der Gefühle bei Depression. [The Structure of Personality and Feelings of Depression.] Online in Internet: URL: http://psydok.sulb.uni-saarland.de/volltexte/2007/954/ (Stand 25.04.2007). Probably the best relaxation-technique is massage as you can see from the articles: Field, T., Diego, M. A., Hernandez-Reif, M., Schanberg, S. & Kuhn, C. (2004). Massage therapy effects on depressed pregnant women. Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 25, 115-122. Hernandez-Reif, M., Field, T., Ironson, G., Beutler, J., Yanexy, V., Hurley, J., Fletcher, M. A., Schanberg, S., Kuhn, C. & Fraser, M. (2005). Natural killer cells and lymphocytes increase in women with breast cancer following massage therapy. International Journal of Neuroscience, 115, 495-510.
But many people dont have the money for professional massage, so there is a need for a cheap relaxation-technique. So I started to develop the "feedback of gravity". The organ of equilibrium and in consequence the systems for relaxation and excitation can be activated for example by swinging in a hammock. For a good relaxation of neck and back muscles it is necessary that the head is laterally supported, so that the head cant roll away. In this way depressed humans could find a way back into the world of gravity including its physical and symbolic meanings. In some psychiatric hospitals hammocks already are used. Sometimes the relaxation, which is experienced in a hammock, can be improved, by putting on a headlamp and following the light spot on a ceiling with the eyes. In this way the head and the light spot generate an axis -- like a pendulum. These two senses, the sense of gravity and the sense of seeing, experience something same. So one sense is the feedback-sense for the other and feedback can be frequently a great help for becoming healthy.
This exercise has a lot in common with the eye exercise "swinging", because the eyes are not moving. But the relaxation in the hammock is better, because all large muscles can relax. If someone follows the light spot on a ceiling -- the mind can also relax, because someone knows everytime where to look at. The eye exercise "swinging" was described at first 1919 by the american physician William H. Bates in his book "Perfect Sight Without Glasses".
