There are an estimated 3,800 homeless youth in New York City. About 1,500 of them identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Government funding provides fewer than 200 shelter beds for all homeless children in the city.

  • wow hanktwofan. And how can they get a job and live independently if they are discriminated, have no documents, no support, no parents, and nothing at all to start over?

  • @hanktwofan hey douche, when students with Ph.D.'s masters and bachelors degrees can't get jobs because of the top 1%, when these kids can't go and get their GED's and college degrees due to cuts in school funding by rethuglicans there is no future. They can't sleep at the shelter as a permanent home, they have to signup nightly to see if beds are available.

  • i came out 5 years ago and im still discriminated against. i was kicked out of my own house in 7th grade. ive lived through it all. im not graduated high school early and going to college. i know how it feels to be homeless and discriminated

  • yes im not a government official but is there anyway i could help. i know how these kids feel because i was once homeless and discriminated for who i am.

  • this tumblr challenges stereotypes and keeps it funny lesbiansusingrowboats.tumblr

  • That's sad :(

  • This should not be what a shame!! I thank God for my girlfriend because my parents stop paying for college. And they kicked me out when I came out. Its a lot they need to change they also need to change independent status requirements!!!!

  • @elfboi523 - I think the most popular reasons parents kick gay children out are: The parents are religious so, they think it's an abomination (God loves all His children - even the gay ones!). The parents are of financial stature or influential to the community in some way and they think a gay child will desecrate their status (these people are just assholes!). Or, they think they've done something wrong in raising the child so, they throw them out as means of punishment (WTF??)

  • @the1tigglet -No. You're right. They will never take your letter seriously unless you have a few signatures behind it. But even that won't matter unless the other people are registered voters. They WILL investigate the signatures! There's a lot of power in numbers but there's even more power in campaign contributions! I don't know how much money you have but it never hurts to have a politician, or two, in your back pocket. A letter can go a long way if there's a $500 check in it...

  • @hanktwofan already in the works, thanks for posting :P I write my reps all the time doesn't mean that the pretend democrats or the dominionist repiggies actually listen to that sort of thing. I did notice that democrats won like crazy this last election day all across states where the repiggies were trying to make themselves permanent or destroy voting or do some other horrible thing to someone. LOL ain't voting fun!

  • @breakingthisdown - Apparently, you don't think I have any compassion. I do. However, it's hard to feel compassion for people that refuse to get the ball rolling for their own self! I'm sorry your parents hate you. But that's no reason for tax paying citizens to pay for your care, year after year. It's up to you to help yourself!! Not me, not the gov't, and not an organization providing help to children. If you're over 18, quit feeling sorry for yourself and get a job!
