Early in 2009, four founding members of the 1970's cult/proto-punk/outsider band,Simply Saucer (Edgar Breau,Kevin Christoff,Paul Colilli,David Byers) along with 2 standing members of the time (Dan Winterman,Steve Foster) re-united to explore, through music, its early, primal roots in a recording studio setting, eventually putting down several hours worth of gritty,oblique,space/metalic rock. Formed in March of 1972,in Hamilton,Ontario,Canada, its earliest musical adventures came from influences ranging from British Art rock (Pink Floyd w/ Syd /Soft Machine/Hawkwind),the burgeoning German electronic scene(Neu/Cluster/Faust/Ash Ra Temple/Can),Europian Garage and Psychedelia (Outsiders/Groep 1850) and of course,The Velvet Underground. Without access to a PA system (the only vocals came through an electrified, altered flute pickup) and essentially drummerless during the first year and a half (Cyborgs era drummer,Neil Demerchant would only be an intermittent part of the band during this time.....), the emphasis was on primative, often homemade, electronics: audio generators, tape loops, echo chambers,an early Moog, rhythm ace, rigged devices and fuzz boxes augmented more traditional rock instruments, guitars, bass, keyboards etc. The zenith of this early period played out in a 3rd floor loft, smack in the middle of Hamilton's seedy, downtown core. In the summer of 73, the band was recorded onto reel to reel tape by College student and audiophile,Wally Lay (Leigh....???),though the resulting tapes have never surfaced in the interveaning years.....Six months later, the band would morph into the tangible and unique force that time and music history have so rightfully now come to laud and appreciate Far from a cheesy, nostalgic excercise, last year's exploration into Simply Saucer's very core yielded some blisteringly savage, sonic soundscapes as evidenced on this excerpt, the soundtrack to a film shot at the time and produced by onetime member,David Byers (The Shangs). Personel: Edgar Breau: guitars, devices Kevin Christoff: bass, devices Dr. Paul Colilli: keyboards, effects Dan Winterman: guitar, theramin David Byers: electrified flute, feedback, devices Steve Foster: guitar, devices, sound recording and mixing
