The origin of this traditional English hornpipe is unknown. Folk song collector Cecil Sharp noted it down from the playing of Hereford fiddler John Locke in 1909. The chord structure is very simple - mainly G and D with a brief nod to C here and there - but it's a tricky little devil of a tune to get the fingers round! I'm playing a slightly simplified version here in the usual key of G. In the first part of the "B" section, I'm playing hornpipe triplets with thumb and two fingers of the right hand, and hammering on the bass G and B notes with the left hand.

Tabs, chords and music are available from my website at:

  • Very good indeed. It moves like the clappers doesn't it. Perhaps its the angle but that guitar looks HUGE

  • @southcoastsounds It's just a fairly standard mid-jumbo, but it does look rather imposing, doesn't it? Must be the angle! :-)

  • I cant find the tab on the site, i will try it again later.

  • @DrOrphious79 It's up now! I tried to upload the 'tabs' page while the video was uploading to YouTube - didn't work! :-)

  • I think that I see what you mean by a "slightly simplified version" (in that there are some great places that you could add more ornamentation) but this sounds great. Good job!

  • @FBrigdon Not really more ornamentation (God forbid!) - just that I've 'straightened out' tiny bits of the melody here and there for the sake of my old fingers... :-)

  • Lovely hornpipe - thanks!

  • Truly delightful; a 'tricky devil of a tune' it may be, but I think you get your fingers round it very adroitly!

    Best wishes,

    Paddy

  • @HenfieldWill Excelent, i have it now, Thanks so much for sharing :)

  • Sounds great, Ill give that a try, Thanks :)

  • @HenfieldWill Well, the folks that I play with are always accusing me of wanting to add in too many "fiddley bits" so maybe that is just my over-active ears hearing the potential ornaments. :^P LOL (And you truly never know how much room there is for ornamentation until you learn the tune yourself, right?)
