Emulators sync the client to the host by running the same game simultaneously, mutually sharing the other players' input. The big problem comes when you're playing games with random number generators (which are usually single player anyway), any mistiming and it's really easy to lose sync (eg. FF3=battle might start on a different square; different mobs appear). Thankfully, there's very little random about N vs S, it's pretty easy to keep sync.
