I suggest you look at recent editions of the New Scientist.
This myth comes from 'research' in the 1960's where people who were otherwise fully clothed were tested with and without head gear.
If they had be serveyed naked a different result would have taken place.
So if you are fully clothed and don't wear a hat then the majority of heat loss comes from your head, however, otherwise it is not true, just a myth,

The statement that you loose 50% of your body heat if you don't where a hat in winter is myth and not fact.
