College Street in Kolkata is the throbbing home of a maze of old book shops and stalls and this traditional place of learning and trading hosts the largest non-trading book fair in the world every year. But encroaching globalisation, in the form of a modern and fancy book mall being built opposite, casts a shadow over this traditional and treasured place. Is it a threat or an opportunity for the traditional book traders? While India embraces globalisation, what does it mean for ordinary people and the intellectual traditions of this city?

This place is cool but I can only imagine the number of forests that have been destroyed and the ecosystems that have gone with them to print all of these books. Perhaps a few kindles wouldn't be such a bad thing yes? I wonder if more people in these communities had internet they wouldn't need to print all of this stuff. I bet the guy who buys all of those little magazines would crap his pants if he learned about blogs.

In my opinion, College Street should be a heritage sight. There are some things that shouldn't be tampered with, such as New Market etc. The whole ambience of the street is something that I can honestly say I have never found anywhere else in the world. The Kolkata Bookfair, College Street.... These have shaped and reflected the Bengali culture; although I have always lived outside the country, the "boi para" has never relented on its magnetic pull on me. I <3 Aljazeera for this feature!

College Street is heaven--my favourite place to visit whenever I go to Kolkata! Why anybody would want to hang out at South City Mall when there's places like this in existence I'll never know. College Street is one of the most appealing factors of Kolkata--the one thing that sets it apart. I love it the way it is, and I'm sure a lot of people feel this way as well.
