Janelle Monae: The Arch Android Public Service Announcement

Speaking to Soul Culture in London yesterday, Janelle Monae gave the lowdown on her latest album / 'e-motion picture', The Arch Android - designed to evoke "emotions you didn't think existed in your body".

She also revealed that the crown she worn in the artwork was created by special effects designer and artist Jesse J. Clarkson, who also designed The Dark Knight and Iron Man movies costumes.

The Arch Android is out on May 18th (US) and July 12th (UK).

it's kinda sad that she has to ask us to listen to it from start to finish. i've always done that and used to think it was as common-sense as watching a movie from start to finish, but apparently these days most ppl buy albums just replay the couple songs they've heard on the radio over and over. it seems stupid to me, it's like getting a movie and only watching the parts you saw in the trailers. why buy it if you're not going to enjoy the whole thing?

the whole album changed for me once i listened to the first album. before i thot archandroid was just an album with a robotic theme to it. but after listening to the first album, i saw the film in the music.

@QueenAnime99 well in any album there should be some thought put into the structure, the flow and the overall concept.

I mean there doesn't have to be a story in it like The ArchAndroid but at least put SOME thought into the music you make.

@Cuddlebunzzz Actually, most artists are lucky if people buy the whole album; Thanks to mp3s most people probably aren't even aware that the concept of an album - much less a "concept album" - exists anymore.

@Cuddlebunzzz I don't know if most people don't listen to the whole album, but I don't see what's wrong with listening to a couple of the songs if that's what one enjoys. No matter what you're doing, you're supporting the artist and I think that's one of the most important things. I think it was smart for her to mention to listen from start to finish (and presumably in that order) because she did a concept album and there are a lot of artists who just do a "regular" album.
