A Desert Rose is not a specific mineral, but rather a mineral formation of Gypsum. A Desert Rose appears when lamellar (flattened) plates of gypsum become impregnated with sand during their crystallization and, in this condition, are arranged around a common center to form a "rosette." Some Desert Roses are indeed remarkably flowerlike, except the texture of the 'petals' is rough and grainy instead of smooth.
