but they took a vote and voted for secession back in the war, y'all had jim crow and everything

from what i can work out up until maybe the 50s on that was a southern state

That's true; Reconstruction was pretty ugly for most Southerners, loyal or not. My great-grandfather on my dad's side was a railroad engineer in Georgia, so his family was probably a little more fortunate than many--at least the trains were still running where he lived.

I'm a Southerner myself. But West Virginia wasn't a Confederate state; Union loyalty was pretty strong there--like eastern Tennessee, WV didn't join the Confederacy until after the war, hehehe. The Yankees came down to Dixie because the rebs started the war--at Ft. Sumter.
