The recent release of Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica Songbook left me no choice but to dust off my amateur piano skills, (which were several years out of use), and dive right into the notes! I've done my best to do justice to one of Bear's many beautiful compositions here, and I hope you'll find my rendition, (which uses a little less peddle than suggested), worth a listen. I apologize for the creaky piano, mediocre sound quality, and occasional page turns, and I'd highly encourage anyone with an interest in bringing the music of BSG to life themselves to go to:

http://www.amazon.com/Battlestar-Galactica-Songbook-Piano-Solo/dp/1617803677/...

The book contains substantial piano arrangements from all four seasons of the show, and thus far they've all been a delight to play.

Now, if only I could get Bear to share some of his taiko scores with the student taiko group at Swarthmore College... my life would be complete! It would be amazing to bring the full force of his driving rhythms, (which could easily stand on their own), before a live audience. (For more info on taiko at Swarthmore, see http://media.swarthmore.edu/video/?p=201)

  • very good but i advise using the pedal and maybe tuning the piano but other than that very good

  • @spartandud3 Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to use my own piano, and I didn't realize quite how poor the tuning was on this one until after the fact; oh well... The decision not to use pedal for most of the second page, however, was deliberate; I'd been practicing without it, and, over time, I came to like both the cleanness of the sound, and the transition that resulted when I brought the pedal back in at measure 46. To each his own, I guess!

  • Hi Ethan, I wanted to say well done, both for this video and for Worthy of Survival. I've been a massive Bear McCreary fan since getting the soundtracks and I've been waiting for this piano book for ages! You really have done those pieces justice - so well done again!

  • @prettypianogenius2 Thanks so much; you really did a beautiful job with Elegy yourself! I've been turning into a bigger fan of Bear by the day, and I can absolutely identify with your agonizing anticipation. I don't often make purchases, but the announcement of this book was almost too good to be true, and I've pretty much been glued to it ever since! Enjoy playing through the rest.

  • Sorry my name isn't Bear McCreary, but thanks for posting your performance. My skills are years below yours and I can't really imagine ever being able to play the whole thing (perhaps I'll just focus on the one key), but it's helpful to watch your video and follow along with the book. Thanks!~

  • @PeterDaley72 Bear or no, you were kind to comment, and it's really nice to know that my video can be of use to you. Good luck with your practicing - the piece can be a lot of fun to play!
