@isohave The duo are considered to be progenitors of the trip hop genre. Their debut album, Blue Lines was released in 1991, with the single "Unfinished Sympathy" reaching the charts and later being voted the 10th greatest song of all time in a poll by The Guardian.

As for your critique of the video - well, for one the song works just as powerfully if indeed not more so without it (hundreds of thousands if not millions, of people could testify to that). Maybe it's supposed to convey that the world around her doesn't matter at that point in time cos of the anguish she's feeling. People from various walks (ahem) of life feature not "wineos" and it still makes a change from the formulaic videos of then and now. Over 2 decades old and still LOVED.

And the strings... If you ain't feeling the strings over the understated yet still brilliant beat there's little hope of you 'getting' the musical majesty of this TUNE.
Your lyrical analysis wasn't very thorough before calling them stupid. Take "How can you have a day without a night? You're the book that I have opened..." That conveys a depth to the emotion of heartache, and does so using metaphoric expression - unlike your limited interpretation 'oh my - I'm so sad'
Still more...

@metro222 This song still IS very popular and in many people's opinions always will be.
The drum loop may not be as complex as say, much of Aphex Twin's work, simplicity doesn't mean it can't be good or even great. To say it contains "just a usual loop" misses out on the intricacy of the production and all that goes into the mix of the song. Bass line, vocals, samples, scratching and much more, are, (in my humble opinion) blended to near perfection...
