- Here I talk about some grain, hay, Vitamins and other supplements. "MODERATION IS KEY" "LESS IS MORE". Too much of anything is not good for horses. I did not mention in the video about Mineral Block and Salt block available in the pasture. These are important so horses can supplement themselves as needed. I talk about rice bran, oats or rolled oats, flax seed, Red Cell and different hay. Too much grain, supplements, additives, calming aids and all the other stuff that people want you to buy is NOT good for horses. Small variety, little changes and a diet consisting of mainly grass hay is best for horses.

  • Is honey OK for horses? I found a little girl feeding the school horse I ride some kind of honey oat cereal and some Nature Valley granola bars. The oats n honey flavor. He really seemed to like it and just wondered if that's something I can feed him as a treat occasionally or stay away?

  • @xEmilyxThoroughbredx : In moderation I would say ok, if you put a cup over their grain then I would it may kill them. You never know, anything sweet horses like, much like people.

  • Thanks a lot Rick! That really helped. About the metamucil/fibre supplements and your grain supplements do you give them to your horses in a bucket mixed all together or do you spread it out on piles of hay in pasture?

  • @Isabelle511 : in a bucket so they don't waste as much and when I add Red Cell, I mix it and get the good flavor over all the grain.

  • Really like the video :) My mare wasnt passing manure :s and thankfully I remembered from this video that you can feed metamucil. Even my vet reccomends it =)

  • i agree with you. i have just begun to study and my research has lead me round in loads of stupid circles.... horses are ok on just forage in the wild. maybe some more supplements may help with older horses coming to and post retirement but apart from that from what iv seed over suplementation is not neccesary.

  • Hay is where your horse receive the most fiber , it is in the chewing that creates the saliva that process the enzymes to help the horse digest, everything is great what Rick feeds except I do not care for rice bran , highly pesticide crop, and acidic to the horses system, you can read more on my new book Natural Equine Remedies on Amazon

  • I try not to give ppl advice at the feed store i work at but sometimes i slip if i see someone totally lost. Recently i told someone the same thing you just said about the rice bran an how it works with collecting dirt and sand an what not an help the horse pass it... there was one other person in the store and was a " religious " psyllium giver. that person said "don't listen to her that wont help your horse you need psyllium! i didn't want to argue. i dont know everything about our supplements

  • hi rick i watch your videos all the time iv preminitly swithed to jumping and i was woundering if know what i should feed my thoroughbred mare btw we train dailey and she is on full time pasture that will never change and we do not show. same question for my new QH/TB mare i do all the same things with her too

  • I love your videos, it inspired me to write this persuasive speech about why horses need to not be blanketed, to be pastured, no grain/legumes, and unshod

  • Wow, this answered so many of my questions! Why it seems to be so hard to find a straight answer, I don't know. But this was super helpful and exactly what I needed. Thanks for the video. I don't buy into all the "feed this super expensive product" to your animal garbage and it's nice to see someone finally simplify the feeding process.

  • once someone told me if a horse is stressed honey is good for the horse since its natural...is that true?

  • My 7 year old AQHA has never been fed anything but grass, hay, carrots & de-wormer. In October I moved him to stables where most of the other self proclaimed "expert" riders basically seem to be of the thought that if I don't feed him a commercial supplement he's going to just succumb and die a horrible death... our Selenium deficient soil necessitates it. So I asked, how do the Elk, Deer and wild horses here seem to survive? I guess my horse has just been lucky for 7 years! Experts indeed!
