Those officers who answered the call to protect and serve, but paid the ultimate price, were honored on May 10, 2010 at the annual Peace Officer Memorial Service at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory. The event is coordinated by the Catawba County Fraternal Order of Police. Guest speaker for the event was the Honorable Robert A. Mullinax, Jr., who serves as District Court Judge in the 25th District. Newton Police Detective Larry Saunders sang "Amazing Grace" at the event. In addition, Newton Police Sergeants Spencer Cline, Dan Harris, and Travis Cline served as Honor Guards. The event memorializes peace officers who were killed in the line of duty, and thanks those officers who selflessly protect and serve. Fallen officers from Catawba County, whose names are inscribed on the memorial wall, include: Deputy James A. McRee, Catawba County Sheriffs Department, 11/03/1937; Deputy John O. Yount, Catawba County Sheriffs Department, 10/01/1967; Lt. Ted C. Elmore, Catawba County Sheriffs Department, 04/27/1983; Trooper A.B. Smart, NC Highway Patrol, 03/02/1939; Trooper David B. Searcy, NC Highway Patrol, 10/15/1960; and Officer Jerald W. Maynor, Hickory Police Department, 08/09/1977. Officers who were killed in the line of duty in North Carolina in 2009 were also remembered: Trooper Kyle P. Barber, NC Highway Patrol, 05/19/2009; Deputy Charles D. Brown Jr., Martin County Sheriffs Office, 12/08/2009; Deputy Brandon S. Coker, Vance County Sheriffs Office, 04/25/2009; Officer Mickey G. Hutchens, Winston-Salem Police Department, 10/12/2009; Officer Richard J. Matthews, Wilmington Police Department, 02/18/2009; Officer Dulan E. Murray Jr., Nags Head Police Department, 05/15/2009; and Deputy Rickie A. Pearson Jr., Lenoir County Sheriffs Office, 04/08/2009. The ceremony concluded with the firing of volleys and the playing of Taps.

  • @Dionysius63 The thing is ... even with this comment ... in the hour of your darkest need, all you have to do is phone 3 numbers, and the police force will come rushing to save you.

  • Why don't police officers put gigantic peace symbol bumper stickers on their patrol cars? That way, people might remember that these peace officers are risking their own lives to save others ... through non-violent means to the best of their abilities. Not only that, they risk their lives for their fellow police officers and grieve terribly when their teamates lose their lives in their pursuit of peace for us all.

  • God bless them
