I am seriously considering this camera as a first, fairly high spec camera (comapred to a point and shoot) over a dslr. Is this a good idea?

I was also wondering if you have come across the 'white orb' effect that seems to occur when taking photos with this camera. Its a real shame and was hoping it doesn't occur in every camera produced.

@caLumCake It would never replace my DSLR, but does offer a lot of similar features and handling. I would say this is a better option than a bridge camera, but not a DSLR replacement. However for a keen photographer it could be a good choice. I did not have the white orb effect on mine.

@rafi160 S100 for me has better end results, but the X10 feels better in the hand.

I must say that your reviews are truly amazing. I usually scour the net looking for detailed video reviews and each time I come across yours its like eureka!! Thanks for taking the time to go into the small details, and the areas that the big camera sites always seem to overlook.

Hey Dave great review. I was seriously considering a Canon T3i or the T4i if it came out but then i had a second thought. They are big cameras. I have never owned a high end camera so i was wondering if i should purchase this and once i get better(at the moment i am a photography noob) get a dslr or should i get a cheap dslr(T3i) and then upgrade. I will mostly be doing car, street, and vacation photography in that order. Also i really love the way this look of the x10 over dslrs. Thanks!

does it take panoramic photos? the ones when you press the shutter button and then move the camera and it creates a single image
