SonianTV presents a video presentation entitled: "Growing Your Data While Shrinking Your Data Center." Topics covered include, costs savings, scalability, and data storage capabilities of a cloud-compute powered email archiving system.
Transcription:
Sam Moorhead: Thanks for tuning to sonians video presentation about growing your data and shrink your data center. My name is Moorhead and I will be joined here by alec Phillips.
Alec Phillips: How are you doing everybody
Sam Moorhead: I just want to quickyly go over the agenda. The problem that everyone here is facing is a data overload. There is an exponential growth of archived email data and this in return is causing heavy stress on servers in in-house email archiving. The solution we propose today is cloud powered email archiving. And we are going to do a quick little comparison of cloud powered vs. on-premises archiving.
Alec Phillips: the problem that IT managers, and most people for that matter are presented with is the ever-increasing data storage requirements. The amount of technological information is doubling every two years. It is estimated that four xatabytes of unique information will be generated this year and that is more than the previous 5,000 years combined. Also all this info is being presented in new technologies with larger file sizes like slide shows, HD movies, sound file, you name it.
Sam Moorhead: Well -- (pause) - Alec mention that the amount of technological information doubles every two years, but what is interesting to see here is that the total world-wide email archiving growth measured in petabytes, is doubling every year. Just to put a petabyte into perspective that is 20 million four-drawer filing cabinets filled with text -- and if you were to stack those end to end, that would circle the circumference of the earth. So we are talking about a large amount of data growing very quickly and this data growth creates a nightmare for IT departments who have to deal with all of this tier three storage data slowing down servers, filling up racks and overloading backup tapes.
Alec already talked about the simple fact that there is just more information out there and it is being stored in larger files - there is a visual representation of these exploding attachment sizes that you can see below. Recently there has been a lot of compliance regulations increases; HIPPA, FRCP, SOX, SEC, DOD, FINRA.....there is over a thousand of them out there. And these regulations are requiring companies to archive more email for longer retention periods. This is coupled with the fact that email use is increasing at 20% per year and message stores are increasing at over 35% per year. These..uh... increase in requirements and increasing amount of data might make you feel a little overwhelmed.....
Alec Phillips: This cartoon is a little scary, Don't you think?
Sam Moorhead: uhhh it might be a little bit, but anyway we uh...(Pause) TC: 2:45min.sec
