  • The scene where he saves the baby is in the Redux edition. This edition was superior to the original in my opinion.

  • @clutchcrazy888 Indeed. Rightly said.

  • @dhsung91 Yah the Plantation scene was really badly received by most viewers, but I loved it. The comparison of 20th century American interventionalism to European colonialism, and as you mentioned the US-French military legacy connection, was brilliant and added alot of depth to the film. Also, in keeping with the duality of man idea, the dialogue between Willard and the French woman, "There are two of you... one that loves, and one that kills." Glad someone else appreciates these subtleties!

  • @clutchcrazy888 Definitely. I also loved the plantation scene in which the cross-over of US and French military legacies, the decay of social belonging and bonds between generation were well explored. Genius.

  • @dhsung91 I agree. So many people didn't like the redux, mostly because they claimed it was too long, too many stops on the river, etc. But for me the redux scenes added so much development to the characters that I can't watch the original anymore without being disappointed. In the redux, the central theme of the duality of man is truly brought to light, and I think that's why Duvall was so disappointed that this scene was removed and his character became one-dimensional.

  • The Lord works in mysterious ways indeed. I used to do a pretty good impersonation of Lt. Col. Kilgore's napalm bit and people thought it was pretty funny . Then one day, I met Kim Phuc as a grown woman. I had put my arm around her shoulders for a picture and quicky realized that all of the skin beneath her clothing where I was touching her had been burnt off. Then I thought maybe that bit wasn't really so funny any more.

  • without brando the film is nothing

  • Deer hunting in the middle of war.... air cavalry on dope trying to steal bicycles......only by Americans. And the Jews cut the emotional moment from the scene.

  • I'd have to go with the idea that the emotion incited and the internal contradictions of the scenarios in the film are separate issues. The original version might have provided a straightforward image of Kilgore as a reckless war monger, but Redux introduces some human (and thus more complex and contradictory) characters that revealed a more unreasonable side of humanity at war. Personally, I would go for Redux.

  • It's funny how there are so many guys that had the same shit happen to them, (flare in the Huey scene), I have heard four guys myself say how they reach and grabbed a "rocket" while they were in flight, and threw it out the door. Really.....how cool was that...fucking assholes LOL
