The St. Charles Museum and Historical Association invites you to reflect on a page from our past. Red Church in Destrehan is one of the most historical sites in St. Charles Parish. The oldest remaining grave marker in this cemetery is dated to 1777. Earlier graves washed away when the river overflowed or were lost under the levee setbacks. Those on the West Bank residents had to carry their loved ones across the river to be buried. This property has never changed hands since the original Spanish land grant was given to the church in 1770, 240 years ago, making it the purist piece of property in the parish and possibly the state and the country. Thanks to the pastors and parishioners of this parish, the rich history of this site has been preserved and restored. Now the members of the St. Charles Museum and Historical Association proudly invite you to join us in turning the pages of our pictorial history. "St. Charles Parish: A Pictorial History," is available exclusively through the Association book signing events.
