I Interviewed George in March 1987.
No one has seen this until now on this Circle Limit exclusive!
This was before Star Trek IV and The Next Generation was released and it is interesting to hear what was going on in the world of making Star Trek back then. Mr Takei was most gracious for a 17 year-old kid!
While eloquent and intelligent as ever, old queen Takei today seems quite a bit wiser.

I'm a huge George fan but his prediction of "TNG will fail and they should do the USS Excelsior instead" didn't exactly pan out...

When Gene was confronted directly by Bill and Leonard, he clearly stated the show was about Capt. Kirk. It was never envisioned to be an ensemble style TV show that people are familiar with today. The so-called feuds and blame game began after the show was off the air, during the height of the Trek Conventions for PR purposes - nothing sells faster than controversy.

All this talk about a how Bill Shatner blocked the supporting actors has been greatly exaggerated and is mostly fiction. The original series was conceived by G. Roddenberry to be about the adventures of Capt. Kirk and his Star Ship emulating to a great degree the adventures of Horatio Hornblower. There was competition between Bill and Leonard Nimoy for stories focusing on their characters and Nimoy was given some latitude due to the growing popularity of Spock.

@bostonbean80 Shatner was a prima donna and blocked Takei's advancement on the show at every opportunity. Takei's a superior actor. Eloquent and intelligent.

notice George didn't mention Shatner. This feud goes way back.
