Portraits from the Ionian School of Painting

The conquest of Chandaka, Crete in 1669 from the Turks provoked inter alia the end of the Cretan School of Painting, and forced a lot of artists to migrate to the Venetian regions, where they could express freely. Many of them went to the Eptanissa, the Ionian Islands, which from the 17th until the 19th century fall under Venetian, French and English possession successively. The presence of these artists in combination with the social and economic conditions (the relative freedom they enjoyed, the economic prosperity and the cultural relations with Italy), led to the blossoming of an autonomous artistic stream open in modern tendencies and the ways of the western art, and the abandonment of the Byzantine tradition, the Post-Byzantine that is to say art, that was dominant during the Ottoman occupation. The paintings, influenced mainly from the Italian baroque, but also from the Flemish painting, began to acquire depth, to give a sense of a third dimension, they became more natural and acquired subjects more and more secular instead of religious - mainly portraits of aristocrats and bourgeois.

Η άλωση του Χάνδακα το 1669 από τους Τούρκους σήμανε μεταξύ άλλων και το τέλος της Κρητικής Σχολής, και έσπρωξε πολλούς καλλιτέχνες να μετοικήσουν στις ενετοκρατούμενες περιοχές, όπου μπορούσαν να εκφραστούν ελεύθερα. Πολλοί από αυτούς συγκεντρώθηκαν στα Επτάνησα, τα οποία από τον 17ο έως τον 19ο αι. βρέθηκαν διαδοχικά υπό ενετική, γαλλική και αγγλική κατοχή. Η παρουσία αυτών των καλλιτεχνών σε συνδυασμό με τις κοινωνικές και οικονομικές συνθήκες που επικρατούσαν (η σχετική ελευθερία που απολάμβαναν, η οικονομική ευμάρεια και οι πολιτιστικές σχέσεις με την Ιταλία), προκάλεσε την άνθηση μιας αυτόνομης καλλιτεχνικής παράδοσης ανοιχτής σε νέες τάσεις και στους τρόπους της δυτικής τέχνης, και την εγκατάλειψη της Βυζαντινής παράδοσης, τη Μεταβυζαντινής δηλαδή τέχνης, που ήταν και η κυρίαρχη μορφή τέχνης σε όλη την περίοδο της τουρκοκρατίας. Οι ζωγραφικές παραστάσεις, επηρεασμένες κυρίως από το ιταλικό μπαρόκ, αλλά και την φλαμανδική ζωγραφική, άρχισαν να αποκτούν βάθος, να δίνουν δηλαδή την αίσθηση της τρίτης διάστασης του χώρου, να γίνονται πιο φυσικές και να αποκτούν θέματα όλο και περισσότερο κοσμικά αντί για θρησκευτικά — κυρίως προσωπογραφίες αριστοκρατών και αστών.
