BELLFLOWER - A vacant bowling alley in Bellflower was destroyed in a fire today, sending up a huge plume of black smoke into the neighborhood as firefighters worked to keep the flames from spreading to other buildings.
Crews were sent to the 9300 block of East Alondra Boulevard at 12:31 p.m., said county fire Inspector Don Kunitomi. No one was hurt.
About four dozen firefighters battled the fire, which burned through the roof of the single-story building that had housed the Clark Center bowling alley, Kunitomi said.
The fire department assumed a defensive mode, with firefighters pouring water onto the flames from a perimeter to keep the blaze contained to the building, Kunitomi said. During the firefighting effort, part of the roof collapsed.
