Part 6 examines whether video games are addictive. We explore the definition of "addiction" and what it means to be addicted to games. This block also studies the effects of isolation, which is an often stated effect of heavy gaming. Insert Coin: Culture of Video Gameplay is a 1 hour documentary on video games and how they impact our culture. Produced by Brent Stafford for his Masters Thesis (MA) in Advanced Communications from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver.

  • At the time this video was produced there had already been a great deal of television produced talking about the "benefits" of gaming. This video was designed to be critical. Insert Coin has no obligation to be "objective" and does not seek to be. The main purpose is to encourage gamers to think critically about video games without dismissing the importance of video games in their lives. Keep the comments coming. Thanks.

  • you call it "the zone" i call it gaming bliss. :)

  • Bliss it is my friend

  • They're gonna beat the game and get bored eventually.

  • video games are no more addictive than your vice. if there's to be a war of the zones being t.v. vs. games. gamers will kick your asses. we're younger, smarter, faster, better and that is reality, each generation is SUPPOSED to be better than you yuppies. deal with it

  • what do you want your kid addicted to, video games or drugs, i mean give me a break,

  • @eurasianchica Yea and how many social books are there? Reading a book is an isolated experience just like playing a game. Actually even more so than a game.

  • I'm in the Zone!!!

  • and about addiction... when an author writes a book they want to make it a "page turner"- of course all these media producers want to make their work compelling and enjoyable!

  • lol "the zone" is possible with other media- like getting absorbed into the story of a movie, forgetting the world when you're reading an interesting novel....etc

  • He's gonna take you back to the past?

  • Actually, these were the days when most games, especially those from the console and arcade, were still relatively simple to get into. Sure they were addictive, but they would give most sensible people a quick fix without inducing them to play for hours on end. Whereas games like WoW detracted from that quick and enjoyable gaming experience, making it a ridiculous, lifelong commitment for most people.

  • You can be 'addicted' to a good book you can't put down or a movie you've only seen a part of and just 'have' to see the rest, this is kinda silly.
