Filmed in August 2008, at the Mendocino Woodlands, Middle Eastern Music and Dance Camp.
Rowan Storm talks about the different names each frame drum has in each country and the confusion that can happen. She also tells us about women only drum groups in central Asia. Another topic- plastic vs natural materials. Please visit gildedserpent.com for more videos on other musical instruments.
Wonderful explanations, Rowan. I loved the performance practices, cultural adages and translations you presented.
One note that came to my attention; using a more generic term, like "metal discs' in place of zils or jingles seems to relate more to a universal understanding. I bring this up becuase some people get very territorial and nationalistic about language references. You have a wonderful collection of instruments, also. I look forward to getting in touch. Best wishes.

Why can it not be found in any Persian music videos before 1970? Because in 1974 Bijan Kamkar introduced it to Persian Music...

Daf is not a arabic word, and doesnt mean wood!! it comes from the antique word "dap" e "dup" that in iranian antique language" pahlavi" it means "to hit".
